Lexichaos Stephan von Huene

Stephan von Huene (1932–2000) is one of the founders of 20th-century sound and media art. His sculptures, which he himself often described as “machines”, blazed new paths for acoustic and kinetic art.

Stephan von Huene, who was born in Los Angeles in 1932 and died in Hamburg in 2000, studied painting, drawing, and design as well as art and art history at the University of California and at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. His early works are influenced by the collage tradition of European Dadaism and Surrealism, combining lettering, fabric, and objects in his assemblage paintings.

Between 1964 and 1970, von Huene constructed his first sound sculptures. Based on research on the acoustics of musical instruments, mechanical pianos (player pianos), musical automats, and organs, they were controlled by optoelectronic programs (punched paper tapes).

In 1977–78, Stephan von Huene was a fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Berlin; in 1980 he moved his studio from Los Angeles to Hamburg.

I have problems with the term aesthetics. I have experienced all the different meanings of the word–and that is a good example for the theme of Babylonian confusion.
